Different labels, a shared foundation

SEO means search engine optimization: helping a website become accessible, understandable and useful in search. AEO is commonly used for answer engine optimization, while GEO describes generative engine optimization. The newer terms refer to how information may be surfaced in direct or AI-generated answers.

The labels are not standardized promises. A business still needs accurate information, accessible pages and content that genuinely answers the audience's questions. Replacing useful work with a new acronym does not improve the website.

Technical access still matters

Search systems need to discover and access the relevant pages. Review indexing controls, canonical URLs, internal links and the mobile experience. An accidentally blocked page will not become more discoverable through persuasive copy alone.

Google states that the established SEO practices remain relevant to its AI features. Its guidance does not require a special AI text file, dedicated AI markup or a separate optimization scheme for inclusion.

Write answers that remain useful outside the headline

Explain the service, who it is for, what it includes and its limitations. Use headings that reflect real questions. Where a topic requires evidence, cite reliable sources and keep the facts current.

A page should be understandable to a person deciding whether to trust the business. Repeated keyword variations and vague promotional paragraphs make that decision harder, even if they look comprehensive to the author.

Use structured data honestly

Structured data can describe information such as an organization, an article or a service in a machine-readable format. It should match the visible page and the actual business.

Do not add invented reviews, unsupported awards or facts that are not shown to visitors. Valid markup is not a guarantee of a rich result, an AI citation or a better ranking.

Set realistic expectations

Search and AI systems decide which sources to show, and those decisions can change. Rankings, generated answers and citations depend on factors outside an agency's control. A responsible engagement describes the work and measurement rather than guaranteeing placement.

Establish a baseline using appropriate tools, record implemented changes and review discovery trends. Avoid treating an isolated example of an AI answer as a stable business metric.

A practical starting plan

Prioritize the pages that matter most to your customers. Correct inaccurate business information, make the contact journey obvious and remove technical obstacles before expanding the content library.

The strongest foundation is not a special trick for an AI system. It is a useful, truthful website that people and search systems can understand.

  • Keep company, contact and service information consistent.
  • Answer specific customer questions with original, useful detail.
  • Use relevant markup that matches the visible content.
  • Maintain technical access and review indexing deliberately.
  • Measure what can actually be observed, without guaranteed ranking claims.
